Luiz Fernando Bittencourt, University of Campinas, Brazil, bit@ic.unicamp.br

Description

The Metaverse will enable a multitude of applications that integrate into the real-world while offering diverse performance guarantees. To fulfill highly heterogeneous requirements and utilization patterns of various applications, new software and computing infrastructure architectures will be necessary. Identifying and modeling such applications and computational infrastructures, as well as their management entities, is key to understanding how they can be developed and managed to provide the expected quality of experience and required response times for digital copies of physical objects, virtual objects, as well as their interactions with the real world. Immersive technologies such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR, AR, and MR), which are often referred to as a universal term - extended reality (XR), have enabled numerous appealing applications in education, training, entertainment, healthcare, etc., and become an important enabler of the Metaverse. However, the performance of immersive services at scale is still underexplored. Social VR, under heavy investments from high-tech companies (e.g., Horizon Worlds from Meta and AltspaceVR from Microsoft), has been deemed one of the early prototypes of the Metaverse. Given that existing platforms have been developed in silos, how to make them interconnected is a unique challenge for enabling the grand vision of the Metaverse.

This track is motivated by the above-mentioned issues, and its goal is to bring together researchers, engineers, practitioners, architects, mobile application developers, use case owners, content creators, and policymakers from academia, industry, and government to discuss the latest research and identify future opportunities for the architectures and applications of the Metaverse.
